Hand Tracker For Mobile Phones

One morning in 1997, Lyndsay Williams woke up with an idea for a new kind of mobile phone, controlled not by keys but sensors.  The resulting patent, defining technologies subsequently used in the iPhone, sold to Apple in 2008.  Now Girton Labs is working on a new technology that might just be as revolutionary.

One of Girton Labs' most recent projects is being developed for a mobile phone company: a Hand Tracker that allows gestural control without anything as complex and expensive as a camera.  Here's a video of the prototype in action:

The tracker uses a sensor array, with a low-cost digital signal processor to interpret the results. It can detect both movement and direction, and even proximity, allowing three-dimensional gesture control for mobile phones, tablet PCs, and other similar technologies.

Lyndsay has written in more detail about the hand tracker on her Blogspot blog, here.
